Starfish Typeface
Starfish is part one of a lettering experiment exploring unconventional drawing surfaces and resist techniques. Each character was hand-written with pencil on glass coated in wet blue tempera paint; as the paint dried, the cleared strokes revealed the letterforms. The original artwork was scanned and digitized in 1999, then outlined using Adobe Outline during a Type 3 typography class project.
The result is a raw, tactile handwritten typeface with subtle edge variations and natural movement that digital tools rarely replicate. Starfish includes 26 expressive uppercase letters (52 total characters) and works best at medium-to-large display sizes where the authentic handcrafted texture can shine. This release represents Part 1 of the handwriting experiment series, followed by the companion project “Finger Font.”
Ideal uses include expressive headlines, experimental typography, creative posters, art-driven branding, and projects that benefit from a handmade, process-visible aesthetic.
